It is dawn and as a routine I jerk out of bed. The weather is quite chilly and seemingly unusual. Up on the trees birds are singing as if emphasizing on the saying, the early bird catches the worm. In the East the sun is rising over the hills making them appear like a giant’s hand warming itself on the fiery rays. My grass thatched and mud walled hut stood far away from my parents’ compound as those old cultural beliefs demanded.
Minutes later, I hear footsteps coming towards my hut. This is unprecedented hence I conclude immediately-something has gone wrong. I feel numb with fear and can’t move an inch. To reinforce my worries are sounds of people wailing but the faintness suggests it’s from far.
Suddenly, my paternal uncle enters my hut, panting, hands akimbo, his mouth wide open and gasps for air. "Is anything wrong?" scared as I was I asked without further ado. "Calm down my son! What God has planned no man can undo!" He suggests as he tries to fight back the tears in his eyes. "All of us will one day die." He insinuates further. By this time I was getting tense and angry. "Why don't you tell me the truth?" I retorted.
"Fine, your parents are dead!" He candidly said. "Dead! Who! When and how?" I shockingly inquired. "Oh God! You are unfair! Why me and now? Who will take care of my siblings?" I asked rhetorically.
I felt confused and for a moment I thought I was either dreaming or in a different world. The tingling sensation was all over my body with my heart throbbing. I wished the earth could open up and burry me alive.
This seemed to be the turning point in my life. I was the first-born and henceforth my four siblings were to start depending on me. Can you imagine such a cumbersome task being left for a twenty-year-old boy?
With the help of my uncle I gathered up strength and together, walked to my parents compound. It was almost eight o’clock and the tragic news had now spread all over like a bush fire. Traditionally, whenever someone dies in the village everybody is meant to show togetherness by foregoing their daily tasks and joining the bereaved family in mourning. The compound, with only three grass-thatched huts was packed and more people still streamed in. Women and children sobbed and wailed in disbelief.
We squeezed our way through the crowd into my parents’ house. Their nude bodies still lay down on the floor in a pool of blood. Since this was a crime no one was supposed to tamper with anything, lest evidence would be distorted. Their throats had been slit using the blood-covered sword that lay on the table next to them. Furniture and Bedding were scattered all over indicating there was a tussle before they were murdered. I was scared, nervous and dumbfounded as all shaked their heads and tearfully stared at me. I took a chair and sat pensively as the nighbour who noticed of the sad incident first tried to console me.
The village elder had by this time gone to report to the police station. In a short while six policemen drove in. The crowd was ordered out of the house as they began gathering evidence inside it. After, they recorded statements from my paternal uncle, three neighbours and me. The bodies were then put in their vehicle as they requested three of us to accompany them to the mortuary where an autopsy was to be done a day after.
It is now three years down the line but the inimical killers of my parents are yet to be apprehended for the mystery to be resolved. However, we later buried them .I have longed for when I will forget this day in vain, but I am optimistic one day I will.

Nkoba Zambogo wins Makerere Gala

Nkooba Zambogo was on Saturday last week crowned champions of the Makerere University annual Cultural Gala in a two day function at University Hall, beating other fourteen cultural, regional, district and International groups.
Zambogo bagged 640 points out of the maximum 700, 37 points ahead of last year’s champions Basoga Nseete. Lango Students Association (LASA) came third with 581 points while ADHOLA came fourth with 567 points.
Nkoba Zambogo, an Association that brings together all Luganda speaking students at Makerere University took the third position in last year’s competitions, behind Basonga and Acholi Students Association (AMSA) respectively.
This year’s Cultural Gala was organized by the Office of the Dean of Students and the University Students Guild and was under the theme, “the role of the youth in promoting and preserving culture and how this has helped to prevent the spread of the Aids scourge” and the winner was presented with a trophy and cash worth shs. 500.000
Mean while last year’s first runners up, Acholi Students Association (AMSA) were pushed to the fifth position as new entrants, the Kenyan Students scooped the thirteenth position despite doing preparation for a single day.
Speaking at the function, the Makerere University Guild president, Susan Abbo thanked the organizers and the participants for their effort in making this event a success. She assured the student fraternity that the Guild would continue supporting such events.
Others at the function were the Makerere University Guild Vice president, Mugenyi Steven, Guild Culture minister, Sarah Nakiwala and various Guild Council Representatives.

800 join NRM at Makerere

Over 800 students of Makerere University were fully registered as members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) last week and given membership cards. This took place at a party organized by the Makerere University NRM branch to welcome first year students to the University.
Speaking at the Function, the NRM Secretary General, Amama Mbabazi challenged the youth to fight hard to combat illiteracy and corruption, which among others, he identified as the major hindrances to national development.
"Examine the danger of corruption and expose it whenever you come in contact with it", Mbabazi said.
He said the institution of the Inspectorate of Government is open to everyone to report all cases of corruption.
Mbabazi added that the NRM government is committed to uplifting the levels of Education in the country to eradicate illiteracy.
"We introduced UPE, USE and we will soon introduce Universal University Education", he said.
The government introduced UPE in 1997 and Universal Secondary Education in 2006 in its bid to eliminate illiteracy which was deemed as one of the causes of under-development.
Others at the function were the Minister in charge of Youth and Children Affairs, James Kinobe and the Private Secretary to the President on political matters, David Mafabi.
Makerere University has for long been known as a loosing ground for the NRM. This year the party has embarked on "recapturing the lost territory". In last year's Guild elections, NRM's Violet Achom came fourth as DP's Susan Abbo won the race. Nevertheless, majority of the Guild Council Representative (GRCs) are from the NRM party.

Thank God for the oil discovery-Bishop tells Banyoro

The Banyoro have called upon to pray and give thanks to God, the almighty for the golden chance of oil discovery he has blessed the region with. The call was made by the Bishop of Hoima Catholic Diocese, Deogratious Byabazaire on Sunday while presiding over a mass at Makerere University .
"Musiime mukama habwa byoona Bunyoro etungire. Atuhaire oil, obusinge home nebindi", he said, literally meaning, "give thanks to God for all that Bunyoro has got. He has given us oil, peace and much more".
The Bishop added that a Munyoro can now walk head high since they have something to count.

Three dropped from Kibaale Quota

Three students have been dropped from the Kibaale district Quota list of this year's entry to public Universities. This was revealed on Sunday (07.0ctober) by the Kibaale district Vice Chairperson, Bizibu George William while addressing over two hundred students hailing from Kibaale district, at Makerere University
“We scrutinized the list and found out that three were not bonifide students of Kibaale. We wrote to the Ministry and we were told that the names were dropped", Bizibu said.
Mugaara Joseph, Mugarura Steven and Talemwa Ivan were dropped from the list but the ministry did not notify the district of the replacements that it made.
It is understandable that this years Quota admissions were marred by irregularities, which prompted the Ministry of Education to institute a committee that went through out the country verifying the names from the respective districts.
While responding to the students' plea for bursaries for the needy students at the University, Bizibu, who is the district secretary for Education, Health and Sanitation, said it is impossible at the moment since the district has meager finance resources because graduated tax, which was a major source of revenue for local governments, was scrapped off. He said the district now gets shs.110M monthly as unconditional grant, on which shs. 99M is used by the district to pay salaries for civil servants and the balance is used to run the day to day activities of the district. He however said the district gives assistance to University students offering Medicine, Doctorate and Engineering.
President Yoweri Museveni in the 2001 presidential election campaigns scrapped off Graduated tax, which was charged on all men above 18 years and working women.
In a related development, the Buyaga County Member of parliament, Barnabas Tinkasiimire promised to take a step in finding out whom the Education Ministry replaced with the fraudulent students they dropped.
“We can’t accept that loss, I will follow that matter. When the minister makes a statement, I will put him on spot to explain the replacements they made”, Tinkasiimire said.
Meanwhile, Barnabas unveiled his plans to stand for the second term for the Buyaga county seat in the year 2011 despite threats by some University students that they would come for the same seat.
“I have declared my intention to stand for my second and last term. I’m a product of competition and I’m welcoming competition”, he assured.
The government introduced the district Quota system in 2005 so as to cater for the imbalances in the public University entry. Students in “big” schools in the Central were taking most government scholarships and little was left for the countryside. Sixteen students were admitted from each district in the academic year 2005/2006, eleven per district in academic years 2006/07 and 2007/08.

MP Tinkasimire assures Bunyoro on oil

Following several attacks on the western banks of the country, most people are found to have taken it wrongly as a proof to the theory that the discovery of oil comes with curses. On contrary, the Buyaga MP, Barnabas Tinkasiimire has attacked such believers saying the discovery of oil in the region is a blessing and not a curse. Tinkasimire said on Thursday(20th.09.07) while addressing students of Makerere University hailing from Bunyoro sub-region at University Hall. He said Bunyoro is going to gain much from this discovery if the outcomes are distributed fairly and added that the Banyoro are still pressing the Government to produce copies of signed agreements it entered with the Oil exploring Companies, Tullow and Heritage Oil. “We shall continue to fight until our rights are achieved”, he assured.He added that his arrest in July this year was one of the measures employed by some selfish politicians to deviate his attention from the oil issues. MP Tinkasimire, , was in July this year arrested and locked up in Morukatipe Prison in Tororo on charges of failing to account for Shs 2m while he was assistant chief administrative officer in the district a fewyears back. He was later released on a non-cash bail of 10 million shillings by the High Court in Mbale Tinkasiimire said a group of people wanted to bribe him to back off oil issues but he remained firm. “They wanted to bribe me with lots of money but I remained firm. They did it in a wrong way; I already knew that they were coming”, he said in a smiling mood.Tinkasiimire defended his critical nature of deliberation in the house arguing that it is job as a member of parliament. “I have taken my job seriously. Am doing my job as a representative”, he assured. Tinkasiimire has been branded a "rebel" in the NRM because of disagreeing with other party MPs on certain issues on the floor of the HouseLast year, Australia’s Hardiman Resources and its UK-based partner Tullow Oil announced from preliminary tests the presence of substantial oil deposits around the shores of Lake Albert in Western Uganda. Since then, some Ugandans from the areas where the exploration wells are located have been seeking assurances from the government that their interests will come first. Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom together with the Bunyoro parliamentarians are demanding for 20% share of the oil revenue. Bunyoro is currently one of the poorest sub-regions in the country with its poverty levels standing at 49% compared to the national level of 30% and 97% 0f the locals depend on subsistence farming. The region gets 1.4%(approximately sh.48billlion) share of the national budget every year.
